It’s finally happening – We’re building a new restaurant!

It feels almost surreal to finally write these words: we’re expanding!
Before the end of this year, construction will begin, and by the summer of 2027 our brand-new conference and restaurant building will be ready on the beautiful banks of the Ume River.

The new building will cover around 1,100 square meters, with an additional 300 square meters of outdoor terraces offering river views in every season. There will be room for about 100 restaurant guests and conferences of up to 120 people – a long-awaited opportunity for us to welcome even more visitors all year round.

“We’ve simply outgrown our current spaces. We’re already fully booked for the winter season, and our guests often tell us how much they appreciate both our food and service. That’s why it feels amazing to now create something that truly reflects the experience people associate with Granö Beckasin,” says our CEO, Cecilia Sandström.

Sustainable – in thought and material

The project, named Nabben, has sustainability woven into every part of it.
We’re reusing materials from the well-known Volvo Ocean Race pavilions, continuing the upcycling approach we’ve embraced in previous projects – such as the Glass House, built from repurposed materials from Umeå’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2014.

This time, we’re building both bigger and more sustainably. The new facility will feature geothermal heating, heat recovery ventilation, and a connection to Granö’s new wastewater treatment plant. A compost centrifuge will also help reduce wet waste and transport needs – small details that make a big difference over time.

Architecture Inspired by the River

The design is created by Peripheral Works, a Umeå-based architectural firm that has made nature a central part of the experience. Large glass sections open up toward the river and the sky, letting the surroundings become part of the space, year-round.

“In summer, the midnight sun floods through the glass, and in winter you can sit in the warmth and watch the stars and northern lights. The river is an essential part of who we are – both as a view and as an experience,” says Cecilia.

A place for meetings, experiences and wellbeing

This new building will be more than just a restaurant and conference venue. It will also host fairs, cultural events, and exhibitions, creating new opportunities for connection between people, nature and ideas.

At Granö Beckasin, it’s less about adrenaline and more about endorphins. We want to continue creating wellbeing and focus in an inspiring environment – a place where work, relaxation, and nature come together in harmony.

Investing in the future – for the whole community

Construction begins before Christmas 2025, with the grand opening planned for summer 2027. But for us, this isn’t just about adding more square meters – it’s about securing a sustainable future for our rural community.

Granö Beckasin will remain a small-scale destination built on respect for nature, local residents, and the surrounding landscape.

“Our goal has always been to create growth and new jobs in rural areas. With Nabben, we’re taking the next step – carefully and sustainably. We want to help ensure that the village school, shop, and community services can thrive, while offering our guests an even better experience,” says Chairman Jan Wejdmark.

The project is being carried out with support from Tillväxtverket, Almi, Norrlandsfonden, and Swedbank.
Forsen AB serves as project manager, with Thomas Persson leading the construction project, and groundwork will begin under the direction of Umeå Entreprenad.
