Sustainable Nature Tourism in Västerbotten Sweden

About Us – Granö Beckasin

Sustainable nature tourism, local development, and unique experiences in the forests of Västerbotten, Swedish Lapland

Granö Beckasin is a nature tourism destination located in Granö, in the forests of Västerbotten Sweden, along the Ume River, about an hour northwest of Umeå.

Here, guests from around the world experience a unique landscape, sustainable architecture, and a hospitality born from the village’s own drive to create hope for the future.

Our business was founded not only to share our Northern Swedish lifestyle and beautiful nature, but also to create jobs, spark development, and promote social sustainability in a village that otherwise risked fading away. Today, we are Granö’s largest employer and a driving force for local collaboration, entrepreneurship, and rural developmen

Our Story – A Place That Chose Its Future

When forestry jobs declined, Granö faced the same fate as many other rural villages in northern Sweden: outmigration, reduced services, and an uncertain future. The village school was even at risk of closing.

But the villagers and local entrepreneurs made a joint decision: Granö would continue to thrive.

It was from this commitment that Granö Beckasin was born in 2007.

We wanted to create a business that showed the village’s strengths – the forest, the silence, the craftsmanship, and the sense of community – while providing people with meaningful work and pride. Since then, Granö Beckasin has grown from an idea into a destination that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Yet the core principle remains the same: nature first, community at the center.
Granö Beckasin is still owned by a group of good friends from the village, led by Chairman Jan Wejdmark.

Sustainability – Our Roots, Our Responsibility and Our Future

Granö Beckasin is fundamentally a sustainability-driven project that combines social, ecological, and economic sustainability. We operate in a unique rural environment where responsible nature tourism, local engagement, and care for our surroundings go hand in hand.

Social sustainability
is a central part of our work:
  • We create local jobs and are one of the largest employers in the Granö area.
  • We support local businesses through collaborations with food producers, guides, and small enterprises in the surrounding area.
  • We contribute to a vibrant village where services, schools, and community life can continue to thrive.
  • We offer young people their first work experience through our ice cream kiosk and restaurant.
  • We preserve the village’s identity by highlighting the nature, culture, and knowledge that have existed here for generations.

Ecological sustainability
 guides our decisions and operations:
  • We conduct small-scale ecotourism that protects nature and teaches guests to enjoy it responsibly.
  • We work with local ingredients, energy-efficient solutions, circular resource use, and reduced climate impact.
  • We follow leading sustainability standards such as GSTC, Nature’s Best, and KRAV.

Economic sustainability
 ensures long-term development:
  • We reinvest in environmental technology, local collaborations, and sustainable building projects.
  • We run our operations in a way that strengthens both the local economy and our own future viability.
Together, these elements form a holistic approach in which Granö Beckasin continues to grow – in balance with nature, the people, and the place we are part of.
