How to travel to Winter Wonderland from Europe

To experience waist deep fluffy snow, frozen rivers and Aurora Borealis reflecting in the ice crystals in the air, you have to travel north. Far north.

Not a lot of people live here

Where Granö Beckasin is located, on the edge of Swedish Lapland just below the polar circle, few people live. Look at this map below, (Copyright holder: European Environment Agency (EEA)). Source: https://www.eea.europa.eu/legal/copyright

To understand where we are, locate longitude 20E (a thin blue line), and follow it from the top, through the Northern part of Sweden. We are basically on the line, a little before it hits the water by Umeå. We are in an area of 1-10 souls per square km on average. This is not the case in most of Europe.

There is no mass tourism here

This is not mass tourism area with charter flights, cruise ships and bussloads of visitors. As a result, the infra structure is that of a regular rural area. You won’t find any direct flights from cities in mainland Europe. However, the journey here is part of your adventure. Below is a helpful start to your planning.

How to fly here

The route here goes via Stockholm International Airport. From there you connect with a domestic flight to Umeå. There are up to 12 connections per day. SAS and Norwegian operate the domestic line. Hence, a ticket with them will give you the smoothest transfer experience. Below are some examples of connections from some major European cities, such as London and Brussels (we searched on the peak season dates February 21–28, 2024). No ticket we found was more than EUR 250 return. The search was on Momondo on December 1st, 2023 and resulted in the following.

London–Umeå: Departure 09.15, arrival 15.40 (Norwegian)
Umeå-London: Departure 09.45, arrival 16.20 (Norwegian)

Dusseldorf-Umeå: Departure 11.10, arrival 15.30 (SAS)
Umeå- Dusseldorf: Departure 06.25, arrival 10.30 (SAS)

Zurich-Umeå: Departure 14.35, arrival 18.55 (SAS)
Umeå-Zurich: Departure 06.25, arrival 12.10 (SAS)

Brussels–Umeå: Departure 10.00, arrival 15.30 (SAS)
Umeå-Brussels: Departure 09.45, arrival 15.00 (Norwegian + Brussels Airlines)

Amsterdam–Umeå: Departure 11.10, arrival 15.30 (SAS)
Umeå-Amsterdam: Departure 16.05, arrival 20.40 (SAS)

From the airport, you either rent a car or we can help arrange transfer. The drive is about an hour.

Travel here by night train

If you enjoy a slower type of travel, we highly recommend the night train from Stockholm. Make your way there via train from Copenhagen/Malmö or by air. The night train leaves around 9–10 at night, and take you either to Umeå or all the way to Vindeln, even closer to us. We can help arrange transfer. Book your ticket here.
